The Gospel of Grace: A Beacon of Hope in a Divided World

Steve Behlke   -

The good news of God’s grace reminds us that God loved us and sent His Son to restore us to our awesome place with Him. Love abounds, forgiveness is freely granted in Jesus Christ, and salvation is a gift from God through faith in Him.

This is our message to the world and it truly matters! “Trust in the Lord Jesus and you shall be saved!” (Acts 16:31).

Yet, the recent political transition in American politics seems to have upstaged this message. Godly Christians who love the Lord and delight in His grace post opinions and reactions to current events with good intentions, yet personal attacks and the harshest tones.

Beyond the call to love and respect, the Apostle Paul reminds us that “our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Phil. 3:20).

Our primary concern is not the words and actions of temporary political leaders, but the unchanging truth of the gospel and the hope Jesus offers to all who hear and believe.

God Is In Control

Feeling emotional about current events is totally natural, but the gospel transcends political ideologies.

When believers repeatedly respond to presidents and policies with such anger and fear, it can give the impression that we’ve forgotten God’s sovereignty and purposes even in persons and presidents that we distrust. But Scripture assures us that nothing happens outside His will.

“It is He who changes the times and the periods; He removes kings and appoints kings” (Dan. 2:21).

This truth frees us from anxiety and empowers us to respond to the world with faith and hope, not fear. Yet it is an exercise in faith when things go opposite our sense of justice and goodness in the world.

Rather than publicly posting our shock and disgust over what a political leader does or does not do, the gospel would have us trust our LORD who reigns over all.

Rather than publicly expressing despair over what a political leader does or doesn’t do, the gospel would have us trust our LORD who reigns over all.

What Are You Communicating?

The way we respond to what upsets the world communicates where our hope lies. Are we speaking the good news of God’s grace or amplifying fear and division? Are we working for people’s joy in Christ, or are we fanning the flames of hate as concerned Christians?

Are we speaking the good news of God’s grace or amplifying fear and division? Are we working for people’s joy in Christ, or are we fanning the flames of hate as a concerned Christian?

Isaiah declares, “How lovely on the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, who announces peace and brings good news of happiness, who announces salvation, and says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!'” (Isaiah 52:7). Paul reminds us, “Let your speech always be with grace.”

It’s easy to get drawn into the 24-hour news cycle or endless social media posts, which are all meant to elicit outrage. But Scripture calls us to, “Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth” (Colossians 3:2). Easier said than done, but that’s why he says it, and the Holy Spirit is here to help us.

How much better to reclaim our joy in the Lord and to steer others toward the gospel, share God’s love for us displayed on the cross, or talk about how Jesus has changed your life and promises an awesome future. These truths bring life and joy and help others see beyond the noise into the gentle strength of God’s love.

Proclaim the Gospel of Grace

Instead of amplifying anxiety and outrage, let’s proclaim the hope that Jesus offers. Let’s share the message of God’s forgiveness and transforming grace as those who believe it.

“God is love” (1 John 4:8). He sent His Son. Jesus showed us the Father, paid for our sins, conquered death, and now offers eternal life with God to all who believe. Like Him, let us preach the good news that liberates captives and frees the oppressed.

This is the message the world desperately needs to hear from those who truly believe and value it most.

As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:20, “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”
