Understanding Passion for God and How to Get It Back

Steve Behlke   -

Passion for the Lord is a critical aspect of our spiritual lives, but it’s not uncommon occasionally to feel disconnected or exhausted.

Passion ebbs and flows and we’ve all been through a lot over the past few years. So if you feel you’re going through the motions or a bit disconnected from God and your church, you’re not alone.

But the truth is, you don’t have to settle here.

Whether you’re “on fire” or you need to rekindle the flames, the Bible lays out strategies and steps that you can take to increase your passion for God.

The Bible lays out strategies and steps that you can take to increase your passion for God.

First, we should define what we mean by passion. In the Bible, passion is generally associated with impulses and strong emotions like lust, anger, and wrath.

In the context of our relationship with God, what we call “passion” is more closely related to what the Bible calls “devotion.”

Not to be missed is the reality that we can be distracted or tempted away from our passions, even our greatest passion for God.

Whether or not, as a believer, you have felt this passion lately, embedded in your born-again nature is a holy desire for God. The author of Psalm 42 writes, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God.”

Embedded in your born-again nature is a holy desire for God and His goodness.

This holy desire for God is a good thing, for He is the Fountain of living water and the true Source of goodness, beauty, truth, and love. God is love. He is rich in mercy and everlasting love. And being in His presence, we’re told, brings the fullness of joy.

This is why we want to fuel and follow our passion for God.

Mark 12:30 You shall LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.
